Carnival stickers flag passengers who prepaid tips, drawing mixed reaction

Carnival Cruise Line has begun placing "Crew Love" stickers on guests' cruise cards to mark those who prepaid gratuities, prompting praise and criticism from passengers.

Carnival Cruise Line is facing both praise and backlash over a new pilot program that places stickers on guests' cruise cards to identify those who have prepaid their gratuities. The move has sparked a debate among passengers about whether tipping habits should be visible to others on board.

The program came to wider attention on Oct. 28, when a TikTok user shared a video showing a sticker on her Carnival card during a recent sailing aboard the Carnival Panorama. The sticker read, "Crew love, I pre-paid my gratuities." The passenger also showed a note left in her stateroom thanking her for prepaying gratuities. The note said the support "is greatly appreciated and helps recognize the many team members who work together to make your cruise vacation fun, memorable and enjoyable," and closed by wishing her a wonderful cruise filled with fun, relaxation and unforgettable moments.

Carnival defended the initiative in a statement shared with Fox News Digital. The company said its gratuity program is "an important way guests recognize our hardworking team members and ensure that gratuities are shared among both guest-facing and behind-the-scenes crew who make great vacations possible." According to the company, the "Crew Love" stickers and thank-you notes are a way to tell crew members that a guest has prepaid, while giving guests recognition for their generosity. Carnival described the measure as one component of a broader pilot and said it is listening to feedback as it evaluates the program.

Reaction among TikTok users was divided. Some questioned whether passengers should have to publicly display how they tip. One commenter said they prepay their gratuities but considered it a private matter, adding that people should not be shamed if they cannot afford to prepay. Another said they preferred to tip cash, which goes directly to servers and stewards, and asked for a sticker that also acknowledged cash tips. Others welcomed the idea, with one user saying they always prepay and tip extra, spending roughly $250 to $300 more on tipping, and another saying they had noticed better service when tipping upfront.

A Reddit discussion also took up the program. One user called it "so incredibly tacky," noting that the recognition appears not only as a sticker but also as a screen in the app, meaning servers and others may see it. Another described the sticker idea as "super cringy" and asked why it needed to be a public matter. A third said they prepay a week in advance to keep it simple and did not want a sticker for it.

The controversy adds to a series of recent disputes over cruise costs and fees. Earlier this year, Fox News Digital reported that passengers were growing frustrated as several major cruise lines raised daily gratuities and added service charges. The same year, passengers pushed back against Carnival's plans to introduce dynamic pricing for drink and Wi-Fi packages. Carnival has not said whether the sticker pilot will be expanded or changed.
