GoFundMe for Lindsay Clancy’s family tops $1 million amid murder trial

A verified GoFundMe campaign for the parents of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts nurse on trial for the 2023 deaths of her three children, has raised over $1 million, reflecting public sympathy and debate over postpartum psychosis.

A crowdfunding campaign for the family of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother and former nurse on trial for the 2023 strangulation deaths of her three children, has raised more than $1 million as of Friday. The GoFundMe page, verified by the platform, directs donations to Clancy’s parents, Mike and Paula Musgrove, to help cover financial burdens from the ongoing court proceedings. The campaign description states that the Musgroves “have not walked away from their daughter” and “have never been unclear about why: they love her,” adding that the fund does not ask anyone to share a view of Clancy or the criminal case.

The fundraiser’s success highlights the intense public attention the case has drawn, with supporters rallying around Clancy even as she faces charges for the deaths of her children. A GoFundMe representative confirmed to Fast Company that the campaign is verified and that funds will go to Mike Musgrove as the intended beneficiary. The platform’s policies prohibit fundraising for the legal defense of anyone accused of a violent crime, but they do not explicitly address campaigns for family members of defendants. The campaign has raised $1,003,758, underscoring the divisive nature of the case.

Clancy’s defense argues she suffered from postpartum psychosis, a condition that, according to the Cleveland Clinic, affects up to 2.6 per 1,000 women who give birth and can cause hallucinations, mood swings, paranoia, and insomnia. Prosecutors, however, contend she acted “intentionally, rationally and swiftly.” Clancy has pleaded not guilty. During testimony this week, providers who treated her after the children’s deaths said she told them she heard a voice commanding her to kill her children, echoing earlier defense statements. The defense has also presented evidence that Clancy sought help multiple times, was prescribed numerous psychiatric medications, and had been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility before the killings.

The case has sparked broader conversations about maternal mental health. On Thursday, at least 300 women gathered outside the courthouse, wearing pink and carrying signs such as “She needed help” and “Peace for Lindsay,” according to the Associated Press. April Vincent, a 52-year-old paralegal from Providence, Rhode Island, told PBS News Hour, “Women are being dismissed, neglected and ignored when we speak up. We’re scared because nobody takes us seriously.” Social media has also seen an outpouring of women sharing their own experiences with postpartum psychosis and criticizing the healthcare system for failing to recognize or treat it.

Crowdfunding has become a barometer of public sentiment in controversial cases. After the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024, GoFundMe removed campaigns supporting Luigi Mangione, the man charged in the killing, but a campaign on the competing platform GiveSendGo raised more than $1.5 million. In Clancy’s case, the fundraiser’s success reflects a segment of the public that sympathizes with her alleged mental health struggles, even as the legal process continues.
