Britain Cuts K3 Scout Cameras Off Internet After China Link
The Ministry of Defence says cameras on unmanned naval craft sent status signals to a Chinese internet address, but investigators found no evidence of a sensitive-data breach.
Britain’s Ministry of Defence disconnected cameras on K3 Scout unmanned naval boats from the internet after investigators found that the equipment had been sending status messages to an internet address in China. The ministry says it has found no evidence that sensitive data or systems were compromised.
The Telegraph reported that the cameras were transmitting heartbeat messages, routine signals commonly used to confirm that a connected device is online and operating. The Wall Street Journal and The Times also reported the outbound connection. The available accounts do not establish that the cameras transmitted classified video or imagery to China.
The Ministry of Defence said the issue emerged during a cyber-vulnerability assessment. It removed the cameras’ internet connectivity and conducted a broader investigation. According to the ministry, that work found no evidence that sensitive information or systems had been accessed, compromised or transmitted externally.
The distinction between a status signal and a classified-data leak is important, but the network connection itself remains a security concern. Military systems are generally configured to minimize unnecessary communications outside approved networks. Even limited telemetry can reveal information about when a device is active, while an undocumented connection can create a path that security teams did not intend to exist.
K3 Scout is part of Britain’s Project Beehive program, under which the government acquired 20 unmanned surface vessels. The Royal Navy has described the platform as capable of surveillance, force protection and precision-strike missions. In July, it publicized an air-drop trial intended to show how unmanned boats could be deployed rapidly from a transport aircraft.
The craft have also been connected to possible operations in the Gulf. QinetiQ told Janes that it was involved in work under Project Beehive to prepare K3 Scout boats for potential deployment near the Strait of Hormuz. That prospect raises the operational stakes of any uncertainty over sensors and communications.
Britain had previously acknowledged broader supply-chain exposure to Chinese-made goods. In a parliamentary answer, the Ministry of Defence said such products exist within its supply chain and that it conducts security due diligence, particularly for surveillance equipment. In June, the government announced continued removal of certain surveillance devices associated with companies subject to China’s National Intelligence Law from sensitive government locations.
The Telegraph, citing an unnamed source, additionally reported allegations that some cameras could remain active after the boats were powered down and that the vessels had been present near highly sensitive special-forces meetings. Those claims have not been independently confirmed in public sources. The ministry’s official position remains that its review found no evidence of sensitive-data compromise.
The K3 is becoming an international program as well as a British one. Manufacturer Kraken Technology Group says series production began in April at Rheinmetall’s Blohm+Voss facility in Hamburg. The company also announced a U.S. Special Operations Command agreement worth up to $49 million in May.
The immediate remedy — cutting the cameras off from the internet — addresses the identified connection. The longer-term issue is whether the discovery changes how Britain and its partners certify commercial components before they enter sensitive military platforms. As autonomous systems proliferate, the reliability of a weapon increasingly depends on software and sensors several layers below the name on the hull.
