Randy Moss and Kevin O'Connell Reconnect Over Fishing and Football
Vikings Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss and head coach Kevin O'Connell bond over their shared love of fishing on Moss's YouTube show, discussing football pressures and family memories.
Randy Moss and Kevin O'Connell have more in common than their time in a Minnesota Vikings uniform. The Hall of Fame wide receiver and the team's current head coach recently spent a morning on the water together, trading stories about fishing, football, and family on the latest episode of Moss's YouTube fishing show.
Moss, who grew up fishing the banks of West Virginia, said the pastime has been part of his life for as long as he can remember. «I fell in love with it. Grew up with it,» Moss said. «My brother fished. My best friend, his brother fished. A lot of people from my community fished.» His passion for the sport extends well beyond casual weekends. Moss runs his own Pro-Am Bassmaster fishing tournament and hosts the YouTube series «Chasing 10.»
O'Connell, known affectionately as KOC in the Twin Cities, inherited his love of fishing from his father, though his early experience looked very different from Moss's freshwater upbringing. «My dad didn't golf. He didn't do a whole lot, but … we fished on the ocean,» O'Connell recalled. «I can remember 12-hour trips, man, out there with some of those big old waves, and I'm out there just having the time of my life out there fishing with him.»
The tradition has now passed to a third generation. O'Connell said his father, who lives in San Diego, takes his grandsons out on the water. «That's what life is,» O'Connell said. Moss replied simply, «Making memories.»
Beyond bait and tackle, the two former NFL players discussed the challenges of professional football, including the pressures of the week-to-week grind and how hard they take losing. The conversation offered a glimpse into the relationship between a franchise legend and the coach now leading the team Moss once starred for.
Despite the setting, the trip did not produce a single catch. But by both men's account, that was hardly the point. The morning was about friendship, laughter, and leaving the stress of the job on shore for a few hours.
Moss's fishing pursuits have become a notable second act. His tournament and show have drawn attention from across the sports world, with fellow athletes and coaches occasionally joining him on the water. The episode with O'Connell fits that pattern, pairing two figures tied to the same NFL franchise in a setting far removed from the pressures of the season.
For O'Connell, the outing came amid the demands of leading an NFL team, a role that brings constant scrutiny and little downtime. For Moss, whose football legacy is secure, fishing offers a connection to his roots and a way to share something personal with friends and former colleagues.
The two men did not need a cooler full of fish to call the day a success. As Moss and O'Connell demonstrated, a few hours on the water with a good friend can be enough.
