A new concept device called Quest is taking an unusual approach to children's technology: using artificial intelligence to pull young users away from screens and into the natural world. Designed for children aged six to eleven, the handheld companion identifies plants, insects, birds, rocks, and other natural objects during outdoor exploration, then transforms the day's discoveries into personalized bedtime stories.
The device, designed by Viraj Gapchoop, is built around a deliberate design choice: it has no dominant screen. Instead of pulling a child into a visual interface, Quest relies on conversational audio and gentle haptic feedback to confirm discoveries. When a child encounters something unfamiliar in a park, garden, trail, or backyard, they can point the device at it and receive an audio response that encourages closer observation rather than immediate answers.
Quest may ask a child to examine the shape of a leaf, listen to the rhythm of a bird's call, or compare the surface of two stones. This approach positions AI not as an all-knowing authority but as a conversational guide that invites children to notice, interpret, and investigate before receiving an explanation. The moment of identification becomes an earned achievement rather than a passive transfer of information.
The concept operates on three principles: Capture, Converse, and Celebrate. Children capture what interests them, converse with Quest to understand it better, and later celebrate those discoveries through storytelling. That final stage begins at night, when Quest is placed into its charging dock and transforms into a bedside storytelling projector.
The plants, insects, feathers, rocks, and animals found during the day become the ingredients for a personalized bedtime story with the child at its center. A beetle found beneath a stone might become the guardian of an underground kingdom. A feather collected on a walk could inspire a journey across the clouds. A flower discovered in the garden might hold the secret to restoring an enchanted forest.
This nighttime experience gives emotional meaning to discovery, helping children connect memory, imagination, and knowledge. Nature becomes part of a personal story rather than something observed once and forgotten. The projector also turns Quest from an individual learning device into a shared family ritual, allowing parents and children to revisit the day's discoveries together and talk about what they found.
The design acknowledges that creating AI for children requires restraint. Quest's success would depend not only on what it can recognize or generate, but on knowing when to speak, when to ask a question, and when to remain quiet. If every encounter is interrupted by information, curiosity can quickly become instruction. The device must support independent exploration without over-directing it.
Quest does not aim to make nature more digital. It uses digital intelligence to make children more attentive to nature. At a time when many digital products are designed to hold attention for as long as possible, Quest proposes a different role for technology: an interface that is deliberately quiet, with value lying not in keeping children engaged with the device itself, but in helping them engage more deeply with everything beyond it.
