President Donald Trump’s appearance on Fox News on Sunday night drew immediate criticism from political opponents, who said the president seemed disconnected from the economic concerns facing American households. During the interview with host Trey Gowdy on “Sunday Night in America,” Trump discussed topics ranging from his ideal golf foursome to his handling of the economy and foreign affairs, but critics focused on several statements they described as out of touch.
Independent journalist Aaron Rupar posted on X that Gowdy was conducting “the most pathetic interview of Trump of all time,” adding, “It’s a stiff competition, but man, this is some pathetic stuff.” The criticism came after Trump claimed he had “largely taken care of inflation,” a statement that drew particular scrutiny given ongoing price pressures. Robert Wolf, a board member of the Obama Foundation, responded on X: “Gas prices are still high. Grocery prices are up big, such as beef, coffee, chocolate. Commodity prices are up, like wheat [and] corn. Fertilizer and diesel prices are up, hammering farmers.”
Trump also repeated his plea for voters to pretend he is on the midterm ballots to boost Republican turnout. Polls have historically shown that Republicans perform well when Trump is on the ballot, but recent polling suggests the 2026 midterms may follow a different pattern. Comedian Stacy Cay responded sarcastically on X, listing a series of things she said voters would need to pretend to accept, including high gas prices, worsening inflation, and the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Another segment drew attention when Trump claimed that Canada “thinks” it is a state, despite his own repeated statements about wanting to make Canada a state. Scott Barber, a Canadian author, responded on X: “We are actually quite sure we are not a state.” The political commentary account “Spiro’s Ghost” posted simply: “Deranged.”
The interview comes at a time when the administration faces scrutiny over economic policy and international relations. Critics seized on the president’s remarks as evidence that he is not fully engaged with the challenges facing the country, while supporters have dismissed the criticism as partisan attacks. The White House has not responded to the backlash from the interview.
Gowdy, a former Republican congressman from South Carolina, has conducted several interviews with Trump since joining Fox News. The Sunday night program typically features long-form conversations with political figures, and this appearance was promoted as a wide-ranging discussion of the president’s priorities.
