AI Data Centers Bring Economic Revival to Rural Towns, Report Finds
A new analysis argues that AI data centers are revitalizing rural American communities through jobs, tax revenue, and lower utility bills, countering Democratic narratives about environmental and economic harm.
Artificial intelligence and the data centers that power it are breathing new life into rural American towns, according to a new analysis that challenges the narrative pushed by Democrats and their media allies. The report highlights communities like Ellendale, North Dakota, which was on the brink of collapse before a data center arrived, transforming the town’s fortunes.
Ellendale, with a population that had dwindled to barely 1,000 residents, was described by its school superintendent as a “dying little town.” But the arrival of a data center changed everything. Jobs surged, tax revenue soared, and the town could finally afford to repave streets, renovate its senior center, build a new public-safety complex, create walking trails, and refurbish its historic opera house. Similar stories are playing out across the country, from Louisiana’s Richland Parish, where a Meta data center funded $50,000 bonuses for local teachers, to Louisa County, Virginia, where data center development brought tax cuts, and Quincy, Washington, where a $120 million high school was built and the poverty rate dropped by 79%.
The analysis, which cites research from Wells Fargo analyst Ohsung Kwon, concludes that communities with data centers see “significant economic benefits” both during construction and for years afterward. These benefits are often overlooked in the public debate, which has been dominated by concerns about environmental impact, job displacement, and rising utility bills. The report argues that Democrats and liberal journalists are stoking these fears to justify government control over AI, a goal that Democratic strategist Jesse Ferguson openly acknowledged when he said, “The fight is over control.”
On the issue of utility bills, the report contends that data centers are not the culprit behind rising electricity costs. Power companies, it says, have been quick to scapegoat data centers for cost increases that predate the release of ChatGPT in November 2022. President Donald Trump’s Ratepayer Protection Plan, which covers more than 80% of Americans, ensures that AI companies pay their own way, protecting consumers from rate hikes. In some cases, data centers can actually lower electricity bills for nearby residents. A June 2026 study found that data center developments led to modest decreases in electricity rates, and in Ellendale, customers saw annual savings of $250. This is because data centers, as massive customers, absorb a large share of the fixed costs that electric companies must pay regardless of their customer base.
The report also dismisses concerns about water usage, pointing to a bestselling book, “Empire of AI,” that was so factually flawed it required multiple corrections, with The Washington Post noting its calculations were off by a “thousandfold.” Moreover, data centers are increasingly adopting closed-loop cooling systems that require no additional water for day-to-day operations. Nvidia’s chief sustainability officer has stated that “the water consumption challenge for data centers is largely solved.”
The analysis concludes that the economic revival of rural towns is a story that Democrats and their media allies are reluctant to tell, because it undermines their push to regulate AI. By focusing on the negative, the report argues, they are ignoring the tangible benefits that AI and data centers are bringing to communities that were left behind by offshoring and industrial decline.
