A violent collision between a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and a Mercedes SUV in Upper Manhattan sent three people to the hospital, though authorities say it is remarkable that no one was killed. The crash occurred at the intersection of West 204th Street and Sherman Avenue, where security camera footage shows the silver Corvette slamming into the side of the black Mercedes as both vehicles crossed the intersection simultaneously from different directions.
The impact threw the Mercedes into the air before it landed on a parked Mazda CX-9 and rolled onto its side. The Corvette spun out of control and struck a pedestrian before finally coming to a stop after hitting a parked Fiat 500, pushing it into another Fiat 500 and sliding into the exterior wall of a local bodega. Local residents told reporters that the two vehicles may have been involved in street racing in the moments leading up to the crash, though police have not yet confirmed that account.
The driver of the Corvette, a 27-year-old man, was arrested at the hospital where he was taken for treatment. He faces charges including reckless driving, endangerment, and aggravated operation of a vehicle without a license. The driver and passenger of the Corvette were both injured and bleeding in the immediate aftermath, according to footage taken at the scene. All three injured individuals, including the pedestrian, were reported to be in stable condition.
The driver of the Mercedes fled the scene and remains at large, with police actively searching for that individual. Some neighborhood residents claim the Corvette had been driving recklessly through the area for more than an hour before the crash occurred, although this detail has not been officially confirmed by law enforcement. The Corvette driver remains in custody while the investigation continues.
