NBC4 Washington's Joseph Olmo signs off from local news
Olmo ended his nearly 10-year career in local broadcast journalism after a final NBC4 reporting day on Aug. 24 and has not announced his next job.
NBC4 Washington reporter and anchor Joseph Olmo has left local broadcast journalism after nearly 10 years in the profession, ending a three-year tenure at the Washington station.
Olmo announced his departure at the end of NBC4’s 11 p.m. newscast on Sunday, Aug. 23. He told viewers that the next day would be his final day reporting in the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region. NBC4 later featured a farewell item on its news page under the title “News4’s Joseph Olmo says goodbye.”
Olmo did not announce another newsroom job. Instead, he said he was leaving one dream to pursue another. He has said he expects to remain in the Washington area, but he has not publicly disclosed his next employer or profession.
The departure brings to a close a local television career that took Olmo through several Washington-area news operations. He joined NBC4 in July 2023 after reporting and anchoring for DC News Now. Earlier in his career, he worked as a freelancer for local and Hispanic outlets and held roles connected to WDVM-TV and other regional television operations.
Olmo is from Annapolis and graduated from the Catholic University of America. He is fluent in Spanish, is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and has also contributed to Telemundo 44. Those roles gave him a presence in both English- and Spanish-language local television.
His final working day at NBC4 included substantive reporting rather than a ceremonial sendoff alone. On Aug. 24, the station published an article by Olmo about the Department of Homeland Security’s announcement that 1,328 people had been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Maryland and Virginia during the first two weeks of the month. The report noted that NBC4 could not independently verify all of DHS’s claims about the people arrested without access to a complete list.
That assignment reflected the regional scope of Olmo’s work. NBC4, or WRC-TV, serves viewers across Washington, Maryland and Virginia and has operated in the market for more than 75 years. The station also works alongside Telemundo 44, an arrangement that supports bilingual reporting in a diverse metropolitan area.
Olmo’s farewell comments focused in part on the collaborative nature of television news. He told viewers that what appears to be a single person delivering a report is supported by a much larger newsroom and production staff. He thanked colleagues and viewers while describing the decision as bittersweet.
The lack of a disclosed next job has fueled interest in what he plans to do. Olmo suggested that people familiar with him may not be surprised when he reveals the next chapter. He has also ruled out one widely discussed possibility, telling the New York Post that he is not becoming a pilot.
No public announcement has identified where he will work next. That leaves the confirmed facts relatively narrow: Olmo has left NBC4 Washington, he is stepping away from local broadcast journalism, he intends to remain in the region and he is pursuing another professional goal.
For a reporter whose career has been tied closely to the Washington area, that final point may matter most. His relationship with the region is continuing even though his role in its nightly local-news coverage has ended. The next update will depend on when Olmo decides to identify the second dream he said he is now pursuing.
