California K-9 Otis Helps Police Seize 440 Pounds of Cocaine During Alhambra Traffic Stop
A routine traffic stop in Alhambra, California, led to the discovery of approximately 200 kilograms of cocaine hidden in an SUV after K-9 Otis alerted officers. The driver, Julio Rangel of Huntington Park, was arrested and booked into jail.
A traffic stop in Alhambra, California, turned into a major drug bust after a police K-9 named Otis detected approximately 200 kilograms — roughly 440 pounds — of cocaine allegedly concealed inside an SUV, authorities said.
The Alhambra Police Department reported that officers pulled over a vehicle along Valley Boulevard near the 710 Freeway. While the department did not specify what initially prompted the stop, officers quickly noticed the driver appeared to be carrying an unusually large amount of cargo. In a social media post, police quipped that the driver was transporting «more cardboard boxes than Amazon on Prime Day.»
When questioned, the driver offered shifting explanations. According to police, he first claimed he was driving home to Huntington Park from his cousin's house and that the boxes did not belong to him. He later changed his account, saying he was delivering diesel parts to a friend's shop. Police described the evolving story as «version 2.0 of his lore.»
K-9 Otis and his handler were called in to investigate. Otis alerted officers to the vehicle, prompting a search. Inside, officers discovered the SUV was packed with approximately 200 kilos of cocaine. The driver, identified as Julio Rangel of Huntington Park, was arrested and booked into the Alhambra Police Department jail.
Following the bust, Otis was celebrated as the hero of the operation. «A round of a-paws for our good boy, K9 Otis,» police wrote in their post. Social media users joined in the praise, with many joking that Otis had earned a promotion — perhaps even a future as police chief. «Give that dog a bone!» one user exclaimed. Another joked about his crime-fighting prowess: «No One escapes from the Long Paw of …. The DOG.» Others suggested Otis deserved at least a big steak dinner for his work.
The seizure highlights the ongoing role of K-9 units in narcotics detection. The Alhambra Police Department has not released further details about the investigation or any potential charges beyond Rangel's arrest. The case remains under review.
