Warner Bros. Puts Hogwarts Legacy Sequel in Its Profitability Pipeline

WBD’s Q2 letter names the second Hogwarts Legacy as part of a smaller, higher-conviction games slate. The company still gives no launch date or platforms.

Warner Bros. Discovery has formally placed the next Hogwarts Legacy inside the pipeline it expects to make its games business more profitable. The reference appears in WBD’s second-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, where management says the Games division remains an important growth lever for Studios.

The company says its refocused strategy is built around disciplined investment in fewer, higher-conviction titles. It then states that the pipeline is expanding, including a second installment of Hogwarts Legacy. The wording connects the sequel directly to the financial strategy rather than presenting it as a standalone marketing announcement.

The disclosure is specific about the project’s existence and unspecific about nearly everything else. There is no release date, platform list, final title, developer announcement, story outline or gameplay information. The shareholder letter should therefore be read as a confirmation of the pipeline, not as a detailed product reveal.

Hogwarts Legacy has already supplied the commercial proof behind the decision. Warner Bros. Games said in December 2025 that the first game had sold more than 40 million units worldwide and had become the biggest video game release in the publisher’s history.

Avalanche Software developed the original as an open-world action role-playing game set in the Wizarding World of the 1800s. Warner Bros. Games published it under Portkey Games. By using a different century and a new student protagonist, the project could borrow the cultural power of Hogwarts without being constrained by the main Harry Potter storyline.

The title launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in February 2023, then expanded to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. A later Nintendo Switch 2 version extended the platform cycle again. That broad availability helped turn a strong launch into a multi-year commercial run.

The sequel was already public knowledge before this year’s letter. In November 2024, then-Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad told Variety that the company was working on a follow-up and described it as a major priority. He also said the games team was coordinating some broad narrative elements with the Harry Potter series for HBO.

Warner Bros. Games subsequently went through a major contraction. In February 2025, the company confirmed the closure of three studios and the cancellation of its Wonder Woman game. It said future development and investment would be structured around Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones.

That history helps explain the language in the new shareholder letter. The company is no longer talking only about cutting costs or narrowing the portfolio. It is identifying the products expected to carry the next phase. A sequel to a 40-million-selling game is one of the clearest examples of the strategy.

The next meaningful disclosure will need to be operational. Investors will want a sense of timing, development scale and how the game fits the broader Studios slate. Players will want the creative answers: setting, protagonist, systems and the reason to explore Hogwarts again. The current letter confirms the bridge between those two audiences, but not yet what is on the other side.
